What Is Dermatochalasis?

Most commonly found in patients over 50 years of age, dermatochalasis is a condition involving excess skin of the upper and lower eyelid.

Symptoms

Symptoms include:

  • Brow ache
  • Reduced peripheral vision
  • Eyelid skin resting on eyelashes
  • Eyelashes interfering with vision

Possible Causes

Dermatochalasis develops as a part of the normal aging process. Factors that may predispose you to the condition include:

  • Thyroid problems (Graves disease)
  • Congenital Illnesses
  • Smoking

Treatment Options

A procedure called blepharoplasty removes this skin for either functional or cosmetic purposes. Incisions are made along the natural creases in the eyelids to minimize visible scarring. Depending on the scope of the procedure, you may be in surgery for one to two hours and can expect the initial swelling and bruising to subside in one to two weeks.
