What is Epiphora?
Epiphora is a term that describes an overflow of tears from excessive tear production.
Symptoms
Symptoms include:
- Excessive tearing
- Lid irritation
- Matted eyelashes
- Mucous or pus-like discharge from the tear duct
Possible Causes
Epiphora may be a symptom of several eye conditions, including nasolacrimal obstruction, dry eye, corneal disease, ectropion, and entropion. It can be exacerbated by:
- Environmental factors (e.g., cold, wind, pollen)
- Sleep deprivation
- Eye strain
- Emotional stress
