Toric Lens Implants
A Toric Lens Implant is an intraocular lens (IOL) that increases and restores clarity to distance vision by correcting astigmatism. An IOL is a lens implanted inside the eye when a cataract has been removed, or during Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE). In effect, the lens becomes an internal contact lens rather than a contact lens on the surface of the eye.
Correcting astigmatism once required tiny incisions (limbal relaxing incisions, or LRI's) to be made in the cornea to change its shape. Now Toric Lens Implants can replace the need for LRI’s in patients with mild to moderate astigmatism. For those with higher levels of astigmatism, a combination of technologies may be used. You will still require glasses for the correction of near and intermediate vision.
