How Long Does Eye Dilation Last?

Special eye drops are used during eye exams to dilate the eyes in order to perform certain tests. The drops will sometimes tend to burn a bit and that can be surprising if it’s your first time having your eyes dilated.

It may take several hours for the effects of the dilating drops to wear off. Your vision will likely be blurry, and you may have trouble focusing on near objects. If light bothers you, you may need to wear dark glasses (or sunglasses) for a short time.

After you’ve had your eyes dilated, be sure to have someone with you to drive you home, since you may be uncomfortable driving yourself. Depending on what you need to see at work, you might need to wear glasses (or keep your glasses off) until the effects of the eye drops wear off. All effects of the drops should be gone within a few hours.
