5 Contact Lens Tips for Spring

Spring brings warmer weather, bluer skies and beautiful blossoms.  But those blooms release allergens which can cause misery for contact lens wearers.  Here are 5 tips to keep your eyes healthy if you wear contact lenses and suffer from allergies this spring:

  1. Take a break from your contacts

Try switching to eyeglasses for a break.  The idea of sporting your eyeglasses may not be the most appealing, but a break from allergens can mean improved comfort for your eyes.

  1. Use eye drops

If you use artificial tears more than six times a day or are allergic to preservatives, keep over the counter, preservative free, artificial tears with you and use them throughout the day.  Remember not to use any redness reducing eye drops – these types of eye drops are formulated for cosmetic purposes only, and do nothing to help with actual dryness.

  1. Don’t rub!

Yes, it is very tempting to rub your itchy eyes.  But just don’t.  Excessive rubbing could eventually lead to thinning of your cornea which can permanently damage your vision.  Rubbing is also a good way to transmit germs to your eyes, thereby causing infection. For relief, try a cold compress or cool washcloth and gently give your eyes a little spa day.

  1. Get help

If you are suffering from allergies, please see an eye doctor for more help.  Allergy specific prescription eye drops may help, and an eye exam may rule out other more serious problems.

  1. Clean your contact lenses more often, or try daily contact lenses

Allergens like pollen or dust may stick to your contact lenses.  Keep some preservative free contact lens solution with you.  Remember to wash your hands first, then gently rub and clean your contact lenses throughout the day.

Also, talk to your optometrist about daily contact lenses. Daily contact lenses allow you to start each morning new, since you wear a fresh pair every day.  Out of 128 patients experiencing allergy symptoms, 67% experienced increased comfort with daily disposable contact lenses vs. only 18% of those who wore one-month disposables (Review of Cornea and Contact Lenses).
