Beyond LASIK and Cataracts: Exploring Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE)

Couple considering Refractive Lens Exchange

Are you interested in exploring long-term alternatives to glasses and contacts? While LASIK and cataract surgery are well-known vision correction options, Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) offers a unique approach for those who qualify. Let’s delve into the world of RLE, exploring its benefits, who it’s best for, and how it differs from other procedures.

What is RLE?

RLE is an innovative surgical procedure that replaces your natural lens with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). Unlike LASIK, which reshapes the cornea, RLE addresses the existing lens, correcting vision problems like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. However, it’s crucial to note that RLE is different from cataract surgery.

RLE vs. Cataract Surgery:

  • Cataract surgery is medically necessary to remove a clouded natural lens caused by cataracts, a condition that develops with age.
  • RLE is an elective surgery for those with a clear natural lens who wish to correct refractive errors and achieve clear vision without glasses or contacts. This is done by replacing the natural lens with an artificial one known as an Intraocular Lens.

With any Intraocular Lens (IOL) replacement, the options of which type to use for replacement vary bases on intended outcome. With IOL’s a patient can choose from a Single Focus lens, a Toric lens (usually for astigmatism), an Extended Depth of Focus lens for near, intermediate and far vision, a Tri-focal lens or Light Adjustable Lens which allows the lens to be adjusted to a specified desired prescription with Laser technology.

Who is a Good Candidate for RLE?

RLE is an excellent option for individuals who:

  • Are not ideal candidates for LASIK due to corneal thickness limitations.
  • Have presbyopia (age-related difficulty focusing on near objects) and other refractive errors.
  • Want a solution to improve their vision quality.

Benefits of RLE:

  • Sharper, more precise vision at all distances.
  • Significantly reduced dependence on glasses or contacts
  • Reduced risk of future cataracts.
  • Potentially improved night vision.
  • Long-lasting results.

Why Isn’t RLE Covered by Insurance?

Since RLE is considered an elective procedure for improving vision, it’s typically not covered by traditional health insurance. However, the long-term benefits of clear vision without corrective lenses can outweigh the upfront cost. Medical Eye Center is also proud to offer Care Credit, that works like a credit card for medical expenses such as doctors procedures, dentistry and can even be used at many veterinarian offices. Through Care Credit many patients are able to get zero interest financing and structure payments that are affordable based on their own preferences.
