What is a Toric Contact Lens?

Toric contact lensesToric contact lenses are a special type of lens that is designed for people with astigmatism.  Astigmatism is a condition that results in blurred or distorted vision.  People with astigmatism have irregularly shaped corneas that do not work with regular lenses.

There are different degrees of astigmatism; some harder to correct than others.  Toric lenses are often a good choice, especially for those with hard to correct astigmatism, though they are more expensive than regular soft or rigid contact lenses.

A toric lens is unique in that the optical power and focal length are designed in two orientations perpendicular to each other.  One of the lens surfaces is usually spherical and one is more like a “cap” shape.

Toric lenses come in both soft and rigid material, just like regular contact lenses.  Your doctor can help you decide which may be the best for you, depending on your prescription and ability to wear lenses. Toric lenses are custom fit for each individual and require more time for the exam and consultation, as well as for the manufacturing process.  It may take a couple of weeks to receive your new toric lenses.

If you have astigmatism, toric lenses may be perfect for you.  Please contact Medical Eye Associates to learn more.
