August Is Children’s Eye Health Awareness Month

Children's Eye Health

Each August, we are able to raise awareness about childrens eye health. During this time, the focus is on preventing blindness and increasing awareness about the importance of children’s eye health. After all, the eyes are invaluable organs that play a crucial role in a child’s growth, development, and learning. At Medical Eye Center, we offer tailored solutions for many age ranges, ensuring optimal eye health and visual comfort at every stage of life. As comprehensive eye care providers, here are some of the ways we live out our commitment to eye health for our youngest patients:

Schedule exams for Children’s Eye Health:

While it is common for younger children to receive screenings, a screening should not be a replacement or alternative for a comprehensive eye exam. It is recommended that children have their first eye examination at six months of age. Subsequent exams should occur at three years old and just before starting school. After that, eye exams should be scheduled every two years or as recommended by an eye care professional. Early detection of eye problems can lead to timely interventions, preventing potential complications and ensuring optimal visual development during these formative years.

Addressing Pink Eye and other common childhood conditions:

Pink eye, also known as conjunctivitis, is a common eye condition among children. It is highly contagious and can spread quickly, especially in schools and daycare settings. Parents and caregivers should be watching vigilantly for symptoms like redness, itching, tearing, and discharge. If a child exhibits these symptoms, it’s crucial to seek medical attention promptly to prevent further spread and complications. Practicing good hygiene, such as washing hands frequently, can also help reduce the risk of pink eye. In addition to pink eye, parents should be aware of other common eye conditions in children, such as amblyopia (lazy eye), strabismus (crossed eyes), and refractive errors (nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism). Identifying these issues early on can lead to better treatment outcomes and improved visual function.

Understanding eye risks for children of all ages:

Not surprisingly, children engage in many activities that can put their eyes at risk of injury! Whether it’s playing sports, using electronic devices, or engaging in arts and crafts, parents should take appropriate precautions to protect their children’s eyes.

  • Sports-related eye injuries are a significant concern, and protective eyewear is essential for activities like basketball, soccer, and racquet sports. Safety goggles should also be worn when engaging in activities that involve chemicals, sharp objects, or flying debris.
  • Excessive screen time can strain a child’s eyes and contribute to digital eye strain. Encouraging regular breaks from screens and limiting screen time before bedtime can promote healthier vision.

Promoting proper eyeglasses and contact lens care:

For children who require corrective eyewear, it’s essential to instill good habits for maintaining and wearing glasses or contact lenses. Regularly cleaning glasses with a microfiber cloth and mild soap can help keep them in optimal condition. Parents should ensure that glasses fit properly and comfortably to encourage consistent wear. If contact lenses are prescribed, parents should supervise their child’s contact lens care routine, ensuring proper cleaning, storage, and replacement. Following the recommended wearing schedule can prevent eye infections and discomfort, and help children feel more confident and independent in their eye care.

Medical Eye Center’s Healthy Start Block Party:

As part of Children’s Eye Health Month, Medical Eye Center is participating in the Healthy Start Block Party on August 16th at McLoughlin Middle School, Medford, from 3-7 pm. This event offers free eye health screenings and various other health checks for children. It’s an excellent opportunity for families to come together, enjoy food, drinks, games, and most importantly, prioritize their children’s eye health. This event is important to our staff and allows us to work hand-in-hand with community members to prioritize children’s eye care.

Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month is an annual reminder of the importance of protecting our young ones’ vision. By giving priority to regular eye exams, familiarizing yourself with common eye conditions, and ensuring proper care for eyewear, together we can protect their vision and pave the way for a brighter and healthier future.
